Humble
Beginnings From humble beginnings, manufacturing the inner structure of
chairs and tables for Bakos Brothers (furniture) to creative and artistic
works such as the carriage for the Cinderella Production, Mission Engineering
have come along way from just 3 employees.
In 1992 Mission Engineering moved into 32 Stevens Street, Johannesburg
and established their first business premises. By this time they had acquired
an additional staff member and started developing products, which included
non-penetrating satellite masts for Transtel.
Diversifying
Mission
then went into
development (1994)
of "mobile
satellite units"
with off-road
capabilities.
This unit boasted
16 telephone lines,
4 fax lines and
a video conferencing
facility. This
patented unit
is still in production
and is undergoing
constant technological
evolution. During
this time, however,
the furniture
division started
to grow rapidly
and Mission then
moved into 6 Hays
Street. In 1994,
new machinery
was acquired which
included the first
rolling machine
(valued at R250,
000). Due to the
purchase of this
equipment, Mission
was able to increase
their diversity
and quality of
service. This
led to lucrative
business ventures
that were forged
with Eskom, Telkom
and Transtel.
An exclusive hardware
supplier deal
was established
wit Transtel and
considerable work
was obtained from
Eskom including
construction work,
mini towers and
bird guards. Quality
approval by such
large corporates
were very favorable,
and they were
extremely pleased
with the product
which resulted
in increased turnover.
Skill Development In 1998 Mission Engineering moved to 66 Wepener Street (Booysens).
Capacity was increased, and the following additional skills were introduced:
spot welders, TIG welders, MIG welders, and aluminum welding. At this
point, the furniture division had slowed down, due to more effort being
placed on corporate ventures. Construction had increased (exclusive supplier
to Wilson Bailey for hospitals) introducing more bending of steel, structured
steel work, and new innovations including mounting of CAT scan machinery
and X-ray machines. This eliminated the need need to import equipment
from Germany.
Specialists
in the Industry The increased profitability strengthened employment
to 8 permanent employees and 13 contract workers (installation work).
Mission Engineering became a specialist in stainless steel, an exclusive
market that was difficult to penetrate at the time. Mission, however was
up to the challenge and performed extremely well in stainless steel and
welding applications.
In 1998 Mission patented the bird guard, which became a very successful
product. At the moment Mission Engineering's premises are being outgrown
due to the demand for this product.

Mission
Engineering aim to expand into the Laser cutting industry and are currently
engaged in talks with the IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) and
DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) to spur this business initiative.
This includes a pre-approved, 30% incentive for two years (R7 Million
investment). This type of service output offered was only previously conducted
by large corporates; and Mission Engineering can now proudly be regarded
as the first Black company to offer such services.
Mission's aggressive marketing
and service performance aims for it to become one of the biggest engineering
companies in the country.
Mission Engineering believes in being aggressive and strategic with regard
to technology, and adopt a dynamic and adaptive stance in the industry.
Mission Engineering will be moving to new premises in JHB North and will
consolidate on their exponential growth.

Where?
Electrical faults on transmission lines are an important source of power
disturbances. These faults have a variety of causes, including fires,
ice storms, lightning, insulator pollution, animal electrocutions,
and equipment failure. An important faulting mechanism that has to date
been largely overlooked, is bird streamers.
How?
Long streams of
excrement released
by large birds,
either perched
or in flight or
near a transmission
line tower, can
cause a flashover.
A streamer that
bridges the distance
between the earth
plane, namely
the steel tower
and a bird perched
on it above the
insulator, and
the nearest live
hardware point,
acts as a fuse
and results in
an electrical
fault. Physiologically,
only larger birds
can cause such
outages.
The
Solution
In the late 1990's, Eskom, South Africa's national electricity supplier,
started to experiment with bird guards on transmission lines to reduce
faults caused by bird streamers. Following on from the successes obtained,
it embarked on a national program of fitting bird guards
to transmission lines to reduce streamer faults. A multidisciplinary team
was formed during 1999 to investigate and motivate this project and in
the winter of 2000 installation commenced and was completed early in 2002.
This resulted in a reduction of 76% in line faults within twelve months,
with 10 of 18 lines fitted with bird guards not recording any streamer
faults since installation. This represents a reduction from an all time
high of 149 streamer faults in 2000 to an all time low of only 36 faults
for 2001.

Mobile
Satellite Unit
In 1994 Mission Engineering
developed their "mobile satellite units" with off-road capabilities.
This unit boasted 16 telephone lines, 4 fax lines and a video conferencing
facility. This patented unit is still in production and is undergoing constant
technological evolution. The mobile satellite unit proved to be a very lucrative
business venture at the time, since the product was reasonably priced, new
to the industry and required no importing from the US. Furthermore, the
unit passed wind speed tests (120km/hour) with a 2.4m dish, was highly durable
(SABS certified), and was exported (10, 000 units) throughout Africa. This
product penetrated the market since there was a need for masts that could
easily be installed in Africa without any equipment installation.
Fixed
Satellite Mounting
Mission also secured an exclusive deal with Transtel to manufacture and
supply fixed satellite dish masts.
Hospital Equipment Mounting
Through
an exclusive supplier deal with Wilson Bailey, Mission Engineering has
serviced many engineering requirements in the medical field. These include
oxygen-heating coils for respirators, sterilization units manufactured
in stainless steel and foundation systems for the CAT Scan and X-Ray Machine.

Overview Steel
has always been restrictive in its manipulation. Bending and Rolling however,
has given steel versatility. Previously when steel was bent, it collapsed
or distorted the profile, however with specialized equipment it can be
bent and retain the shape and profile without distortion. Steel can now
be used in a whole host of applications previously unheard of. It can
be used to replace wooden parts and plastic parts and is strong and versatile.
Furthermore, steel can be welded and will maintain integrity. Labour can
be reduced from 40 hours to one hour on site. The application of steel
bending and rolling can be seen in many architectural, automotive, home
and office settings.
Mission
Engineering boasts the biggest Steel Rolling Machine to come into South
Africa in 20 years. The Tauring CN 150 Bending and Rolling Machine is
a CNC controlled unit (programmable) and is the only one in the country
with such capabilities and technologies. It is capable of bending a whole
range of profiles and can bend anything from 10mm to 168mm and includes
square profiles to I-beam profiles. Mission Engineering currently
have two machines, the APLHA and the DELTA series.
Profiles These universal bending machines are capable of producing any
kind of profile suitable for manufacturing heavy structures and carpentry
in general. Their functional features include 3 driving rolls and double
independent adjusted bending machines, which can produce:
Tubes
Coils, Rails,Pipes
Flats and angles
Flanges, Fifth wheels, Circles
Standard and special profiles
Railway Tracks, Guardrails, Protection guards
Mission Engineering also offer excellent skill in Mandrel bending of aluminium,
copper, steel and stainless steel for the furniture and engineering applications. To view Profile details, click on the following
